New research suggests that women incorporating a significant amount of plant-based proteins into their diets are 46% more likely to maintain good health in later years. This revelation comes from a study led by Tufts University researchers and is set to be published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study spanned 32 years and analyzed the dietary habits of 48,000 women.
The findings challenge the conventional belief that only fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans contribute to a healthy diet. According to the study, even items like bread, pasta, mashed potatoes, and certain baked goods, including pizza, can be part of a health-promoting diet. The research indicates that those favoring plant-based proteins are more likely to avoid conditions like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, as well as cognitive and mental health declines.
Interestingly, the benefits were not observed in those consuming higher amounts of animal-based proteins, such as meat, fish, and cheese. The key plant-based protein sources identified in the study encompassed a wide range, from traditional choices like vegetables, fruits, nuts, and beans to unexpected entries like pizza, cereal, and baked items.
Andres Ardisson Korat, the lead author of the study, clarified that items like pizza and baked goods made the list due to their prevalence in the U.S. diet and their content of gluten, a plant-based protein. He emphasized that the study doesn't endorse the overall healthiness of these items but rather underscores the positive contribution of plant-based proteins found in them.
The study drew data from the Nurses' Health Study, an extensive observational study focusing on female healthcare professionals. Despite its insightful findings, the study has limitations, being observational and reliant on self-reported nutrition data. Additionally, the majority of participants were white women, raising questions about the generalizability of the findings to other ethnic backgrounds and men.
While the research offers valuable insights, it's important to maintain a balanced perspective. The relative nature of the findings emphasizes that while pizza or bread might be preferable to certain less healthy options, a diet rich in beans, salads, and fruits is likely a superior choice. The study underscores the importance of ongoing scientific inquiry and encourages common sense in making informed dietary choices.
